Faculty Mentors

ArtsBridge faculty mentors will provide guidance and mentorship throughout scholars’ service. Dedicated to the inclusion of the arts in K-12 classrooms, Faculty Mentors are encouraged to work with their Scholars to tailor each lesson plan to their art discipline and core curriculum areas.

Dr. Megan Alrutz
UCF Conservatory Theatre

Megan Alrutz is an Assistant Professor of Theatre and the Coordinator of the MFA in Theatre for Young Audiences at the University of Central Florida and the Orlando Repertory Theatre. She earned a Ph.D. in Theatre (with an emphasis in Theatre for Youth) from Arizona State University, and a B.A. in Theatre from Rutgers University. Her creative and scholarly interests focus on using drama to teach across the curriculum, employing drama and digital storytelling to explore voice and identity, and investigating drama-based pedagogy for the university classroom. Megan continues to write and present on using drama to teach elementary science and employing multi-media and devising techniques in community based settings with young people, as well as drama workshops for pre-and in-service teachers. She is the director of Artsbridge UCF, co-managing Editor for ASSITEJ USA's TYA (Theatre for Young Audiences) Today, and was recently appointed as a service-learning faculty fellow for UCF.

Gary Cadwallader
Education Director, The Orlando Repertory Theatre

Gary Cadwallader is an actor, director and the Education Director at Orlando Repertory Theatre.  Previously at the REP, Gary has directed The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and Go, Dog. Go!, as well as the 2008 summer Youth Academy production of Footloose.  At Seaside Music Theater in Daytona Beach, Gary has directed Little Shop of Horrors and A Year With Frog and Toad, among many others.  As an actor, Gary most recently played Phil Davis in White Christmas at SMT, as well as Hornbeck in Inherit The Wind at Northern Stage in Vermont; Kabuki Medea, M. Butterfly, and The Great Gatsby at Chicago's Wisdom Bridge Theater, the national tour of Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, roles in A League of Their Own, The New Untouchables and Forensics (pilot), as well as many commercial voice-overs. Gary has an MFA in acting from Western Illinois University, a BA in theatre from St. Edward's University in Austin, TX, and is a proud member of Actors' Equity Association and the Screen Actors Guild.

Mary Palmer
Director, Through the Arts and Connect with Music

Dr. Mary Palmer is President of Mary Palmer & Associates, LLC. She has extensive experience in education and the arts and holds Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral Degrees from the University of Illinois. She has taught music and the other arts in a variety of school and community settings to people of all ages from birth through senior citizens. She currently is Professor of Music Education at the University of Central Florida – Orlando, and is former Dean of the UCF College of Education. She has served as President of professional organizations including MENC: National Association for Music Education Southern Division; VSA Arts of Florida; Florida Music Educators Association; and the Florida Alliance for Arts Education. In addition, she serves on various community boards of directors including Florida Theatrical Association, A Gift for Teaching, and A Gift for Music.

Palmer has developed numerous arts education programs. She is the Founder of Arts for a Complete Education, Florida's program to enhance arts education and to influence related public policy. Since 1985, she has authored numerous elementary music series textbooks published by Silver Burdett Ginn/Scott Foresman Publishers. She has established award-winning collaborative programs with Walt Disney World, Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, Junior Achievement, and others. Her innovative work with teachers, school administrators, community agencies, and university faculty has led her across the country and around the world. For her work in Arts Education she has received numerous awards, including a special commendation from three of Florida’s Governors; the prestigious Arts Recognition Award from the Florida Department of State; ACE of Hearts; and Pi Delta Kappa Educator of the Year. Her client schools have received prestigious awards including the Kennedy Center Arts Education School of Distinction, Florida Department of Education Music Demonstration School, and Magnet Schools of America School of Distinction.

Dr. Sybil St. Claire
UCF Conservatory Theatre

A career theatre artist and arts educator Sybil St. Claire works as a Lecturer in the Theatre for Young Audiences graduate program at the University of Central Florida. She is an award winning union director, and an internationally produced and published playwright, Her experience runs the gamut from theatre for the deaf to utilizing theatre as a therapeutic modality with terminally ill pediatric patients, and children in foster care. Though diverse, her work shares a unifying thread, that of empowering others to live their best lives.

Vandy Wood
UCF Conservatory Theatre

Vandy has be designing professionally for theatre and video since 1986. Recent creative activiteis include lighing designre for the New Plays Festivals at Mill Mountian Theatre, Associate Director for "Panter and Crane", Scenographer/ Assistant Director for "A Body In Motion". Recent scenic designs include "Once On This Island", "Picnic", "Three Sisters", "The Visit", and "Good Woman of Setzuan" for UCF Conservatory Theatre, where she is a member of the design faculty; and "Just So", "Crazy for You", "Disney's Beauty and the Beast" for The Orlando Repertory Theatre.

Earl Weaver
UCF Conservatory Theatre

Earl D. Weaver is an Assistant Professor/Coordinator of Musical Theatre at the University of Central Florida and an active member of Actors’ Equity Association. This is his third year as an ArtsBridge Mentor. Earl also has served as a Faculty Mentor for the UCF RAMP, SMART, and Lead Scholars Programs, working with undergraduate students seeking a research experience. Topics have included “Famous African-American Women in Musical Theatre” and “The History of British Music Hall.” Earl holds an MFA degree in Drama/Musical Theatre from the University of California, Irvine and a BA degree in Theatre/Dance from the University of Redlands.
